Sehr geehrte Frau/Sehr geehrter Herr ...

Mein Vater Stefan Thiel (1908–1998) stammte aus der Vojvodina (Filipowa/Backi Gracac), er war zwischen 1937 und 1945 in Vukovar als Religionslehrer beschäftigt. Er wurde bei der Übernahme der Stadt 1945 von den Partisanen verhaftet und ab Mai 1945 in verschiedenen Arbeitslagern festgehalten, wo er nur durch glückliche Zufälle überlebte. 1953 emigrierte er mit seiner Frau, die er in einem der Lager kennengelernt hatte, nach Österreich.
Er hat zeitlebens kaum über seine Erlebnisse gesprochen, ausgenommen ein Ereignis im August 1945, das mit dem späteren Außenminister Jugoslawiens, Koca Popovic, zusammenhängen soll. Dieser soll als Kommandeur einer Partisanendivision 300 Deutsche (Soldaten und Zivilisten, Männer und Frauen) bis zum Kopf in einen bosnischen Acker (Ort Doboj/Usora) eingraben und mit einer Egge töten haben lassen.
Ich bin nach langem Suchen auf einen Zeitungsartikel ("Neuland") aus dem Jahr 1963 gestoßen, in dem dieses Ereignis ausführlich beschrieben steht. Allerdings ist dieser Artikel folgenlos geblieben und in Vergessenheit geraten. Auch habe ich ein Foto jener Zuckerfabrik, aus der Gefangene den Vorgang beobachten konnten, gefunden .
Ich wäre allen dankbar, wenn ich durch Hinweise ein wenig Klarheit in diese Geschichte bringen könnte. Ich will lediglich die wenigen Erinnerungen, die von meinem Vater überliefert sind, in einen größeren Zusammenhang bringen, um sie zu verstehen. Dabei will ich keine Schuldigen ausfindig machen oder diese zur Verantwortung ziehen. Was ich versuche, ist eine persönliche Annäherung an diffuse Erinnerungen und eine zumindest ansatzweise Klärung des Geschehens. Ist dies nicht möglich, so soll zumindest diesen grauenhaften Erzählungen, die wir ja nicht nur aus dieser Zeit kennen, ein Platz innerhalb unserer Erinnerungsmechanismen zugewiesen werden, um ihre Wirkungsmächtigkeit zu bannen.

Postovana gospodjo / Postovani gospodine ...!

Moj otac Stefan Til (1908- 1998.) potjece iz Vojvodine (Filipovo / Backi Gracac) i bio je izmedju 1937. i 1945. zaposlen kao vjeroucitelj u Vukovaru. 1945. je prilikom preuzimanja grada od strane partizana uhicen i od svibnja 1945. drzan u razlicitim radnim logorima, u kojima je samo igrom slucaja prezivio. 1953. je sa svojom suprugom, koju je upoznao u jednom od logora emigrirao u Austriju. Za vrijeme svog zivota gotovo da nije govorio o svojim dozivljajima, osim o jed- nom iz kolovoza 1945., koji bi trebao imati veze sa kasnijim ministrom vanjskih poslova Jugoslavije- Kocom Popovicem. On je navodno, kao zapovjednik jedne partizanske divizije 300 nemaca (vojnika i civila, muskaraca i zena) zakopao do glave na jednom bosanskom polju (mjesto: Doboj / Usora) gdje ih je ubio presa- vsi drljacom preko njih.
Nakon dugog traganja sam naisao na jedan novinski clanak (nojland- „Neuland“) iz 1963. u kojem je ovaj dogadjaj opsirno opisan. Medutim, ovaj clanak nije imao nikakve posljedice i zapao je u zaborav. Takodje sam pronasao i jednu sliku tvornice secera, iz koje su zatvorenici mogli promatrati taj dogadjaj.
Bio bih svima jako zahvalan, ako bi nekim nagovjestajem, smjernicom mogao unjeti malo bistrine u ovu pricu. Ja samo zelim ovo malo od moga oca prenesenih sjecanja da dovedem u jedan siri kontekst, kako bi ih razumio. Pritom, ne zelim da nadem krivce ili da ih pozovem na odgovornost. Ono sto pokusavam je osobno priblizavanje difuznim sjecanjima i makar rudimentarno razjasnjenje dogadjaja. Ako ovo nije moguce, onda bi makar ovim jezivim pricama koje ne poznajemo samo iz ovog vremena, trebalo biti dodijeljeno mjesto unutar naseg mehanizma pam?enja, kako bi se njihova snaga djelovanja zaustavila.

My father Stefan Thiel (1908–1998) was born in Vojvodina (Filipovo/Backi Gracac). From 1937 to 1945, he was a teacher for religious education in Vukovar. In 1953, he emigrated with his wife, whom he had met in one of the camps, to Austria. Throughout his life, he hardly spoke of his experiences, with the exception of one incident in August 1945, which is said to be connected with the later Foreign Minister of Yugoslavia, Koca Popovic. He allegedly ordered that 300 Germans (soldiers, civilians, men and women) be buried up to their necks in a Bosnian field (in Usora/Doboj-Usora) and have them killed with a harrow while he was commander of a partisan division. After an extensive search I came across a newspaper article from 1963, which describes this alleged massacre. However, this article bore no consequences and has long since been forgotten. In the meantime, I found a photograph of the sugar mill, from which the captives were able to observe the scene. I would be very grateful if I could, with your help, bring a little clarity into this matter. My sole purpose is to bring the few memories that my father has left me into greater context in order to better understand them. I do not wish to identify the guilty parties nor bring anyone to justice. I merely seek a personal approach to diffuse memories and at the very least find a rudimentary inter- pretation of the happenings. If this is not possible, then at least these horrific tales, which we know not only from this period in time, should be assigned an adequate place in our memories in order to ban their effectiveness.
